Air Source Heat Pump Integrated Into Cylinder
Provides hot water directly into a cylinder using an integral heat pump which extracts heat from outside air.


A heat pump cylinder looks like a traditional hot water cylinder, but it has a discrete integral heat pump mounted on top. It can provide hot water very efficiently, working like a traditional air source heat pump, extracting heat from external fresh air via insulated ducting to provide hot water directly into the cylinder.


A heat pump cylinder only provides hot water and is more suitable for smaller house types with lower demands. A larger outdoor heat pump will provide both space heating and hot water. Heat pump cylinders are relatively low maintenance and require an annual check.

Air Source Heat Pump
Extracts heat from the outside air to provide heating and hot water in your home.


Air source heat pumps are a low carbon way to provide heat and hot water in a home. Heat pumps use technology similar to that found in air conditioning units but in reverse, drawing in outside air and extracting the heat from it.


Pipes in the heat pump contain a liquid, known as a refrigerant. This heat from the air is warm enough to turn the refrigerant liquid into a gas. This gas is then moved through a compressor resulting in an increase in pressure and a rise in temperature.


The gas, which is now heated, is passed over an internal heat exchange surface and this heat can either be blown around the interior of the home or transferred into a central heating or hot water system.


As the heat is transferred into the home, the gas falls in temperature and returns to a liquid. This cycle of reverse refrigeration repeats until your home reaches the required temperature setting on your thermostat.


Heat pumps operate from electricity and therefore eliminate the need for gas boilers, so there is no direct use of fossil fuels in your heating and hot water systems. The only by-product is cold air.


Air source heat pump units are generally installed externally and require a yearly maintenance check. At Sudbury, we are also trialling an air source heat pump which is built into the roof space and are the first developer in the UK to do so on a live development.

Block build with enhanced walls
A traditional masonry construction approach using lightweight thermal blocks and wider cavities to increase insulation levels and reduce the wall U-values.


Our masonry approach for the homes at Sudbury uses an enhanced brick wall design with 150mm of cavity insulation to provide a U-value of 0.18. The windows are triple glazed, with a U-value of 0.8, and more thermally efficient than double glazing. The front doors have a low thermal transmission and a U-value of just below 1. Careful consideration has been given to thermal bridging junctions to further reduce heat loss and this, combined with lower air tightness levels, with appropriate ventilation systems, helps us ensure that the homes are more efficient. With the reduction in air permeability rates, the ventilation strategy is a key consideration.

Heated Skirting Boards
An innovative heating system to replace radiators designed to look like a skirting board.


A ThermaSkirt® system looks like a skirting board and serves as a replacement for radiators. Hot water pipes are completely concealed in a similar profile to a standard skirting board and are fitted around the perimeter of the room. A thermally-efficient outer panel extracts heat from the pipes and radiates it into the room, quickly warming the air. This low maintenance system is completely concealed, it does not limit the interior design and furniture can be configured as desired.

Smart Cylinder

This cylinder uses smart technology build a schedule to ensure you always have enough hot water. It also heats the water within the cylinder from the top, unlike a traditional cylinder that heats from the bottom. This means you only heat the amount of water needed as opposed to the full tank and this can significantly reduce energy wastage.

Underfloor Heating
Provides heat evenly and efficiently throughout a room beneath the floor.


Underfloor heating works by circulating warm water through a network of pipes beneath the floor screed. Compared to a traditional central heating system - where heat quickly disperses from radiators - underfloor heating heats the entire surface of the floor. This creates a much more even, efficient distribution of heat and means that water within the heating system does not need to reach as high a temperature due to the larger surface area being heated. As the underfloor heating is completely concealed and there are no radiators, there is more wall space and no limitations to how you can arrange your furniture.
